A creepy children’s christmas show based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen. The design took inspiration from German woodcuts, and enabled the audience perspective to change from a deep forest with a huge moon, to a village within the woodland, to the bottom of a well where the witch appeared in a projection peering down a well – the audience with the soldier at the bottom of the well, and a prison, where the cat looked down on the soldier.
“The set and costumes are outstanding, managing to marry audience imagination and simple theatre magic – the moon doubles as a projection screen, for instance – and conjure up, by turns, a spooky forest, an inn, the princess’s bedchamber, a jail and even the bottom of a tree.”
