A ruined homeland sinking in oil greets the veterans as they return from an unjust war abroad. Helen’s oil-spill train contains the greed of capitalist culture, her war veterans appear like wounded sea-birds, tarred and feathered.
The dramatic ending of the oil running out was achieved by flying strips of the floor to reveal the ‘blood’ underneath.
The costume designs are surreal collages, inspired by the text, itself a collage of different contemporary texts.
The designs for Orestes were chosen to represent the UK at PQ07: Prague Quadrennial 11th International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture 2007.
